Introduction to Chin Augmentation

It is commonly associated with an enlarged, projected nose.  Chin recession can be mild, moderate, or severe.  It is most noticeable in a profile view and patients often say they don’t like how they look in photos.  The attractive facial profile with normal chin projection is demonstrated by a line dropped vertically from the forehead to the edge of the upper lip and lower lip. The edge of the chin should touch or fall just behind this vertical line as shown below.
A noticeably recessed chin falls more than 5 mm behind this vertical line.  A simple correction for this deficiency would be to place a crescent-shaped silicone implant against the part of the jaw bone that forms the chin as shown below.
Placement of a chin implant can augment the chin by 5-10 mm.  The result can be a dramatic improvement in the patient’s jaw line that enhances the beauty of other facial features as shown below.
Before and After
Patient #1: This is a 29 y.o. female who complains that her chin is too small and recessed back.  She especially dislikes how she looks in photos where her nose and lips have normal projection but her chin looks collapsed.  She also dislikes her double-chin appearance caused by excess fat in the neck.  She underwent chin implant placement with liposuction of the neck.  She now loves the projection of her new chin and her new jaw line which is much more defined and makes her face look thinner.

Patient #2: This is a 25 y.o. female who complains that her chin looks too small and makes the lower third of her face look weak.  She tries not to turn sideways in photos because she is embarrassed by her profile view.  She underwent chin implant placement which gives her neck a sharper, more acute angle.  It has also lengthened her jaw line and makes her face look overall thinner and more attractive.

The Chin Augmentation Surgery

The soft tissues and muscles are dissected off the jaw bone to expose the part of the jaw bone that forms the chin.  The implant is then placed in front of the jaw bone and secured with stitches as shown below.
The incision in the gum line is closed with stitches.  Tape is then placed on the external skin above and below the chin to compress the soft tissues against the implant while it is healing.
The Recovery From Chin Augmentation
Recovery from a Chin Augmentation is remarkably less painful than one might expect.  You will be prescribed medication for pain and nausea.  You will also be given antibiotics to prevent infection.  The head should be kept elevated for the first several days to lessen the swelling.  It is normal to have swelling of the lower face and numbness of the chin.  You should be up and about the next day to prevent blood clots from developing in the veins of the legs.  Stitches are dissolvable and do not need to be removed.  Swelling takes up to two months to completely resolve and there should be no bruising.  Most patients can return to work by one week after surgery. It is not unusual for patients to feel rather strange about their appearance for the first several months.  By 3 months after surgery, most patients are highly satisfied with their results.  Doctor Doan and his staff will guide you through the entire recovery period to make sure that it is as smooth as possible.
Complications From Chin Augmentation
If you are a healthy candidate with no pre-existing disorders or diseases which may inhibit healing, the general risks of Chin Augmentation surgery are very low.  However, since it is indeed surgery, there are inherent risks you must consider before choosing to undergo a procedure such as this.  Potential complications associated with Chin Augmentation surgery may include the following:
  • Bleeding:  This is a very rare complication which might require a minor procedure to drain the blood.
  • Infection:  Even when the implant is placed through the mouth, the risk of infection is extremely low.  If it does happen, it may require removal of the implant and antibiotics.
  • Skin Numbness:  This results from nerve damage or stretching of the nerve and usually resolves by one year if not sooner.
  • Implant Shifting:  This may occur due to trauma or the constant movement of the jaw. It may require a revision procedure.
